DEERHUNTER Vs. BROADCAST
I'll just sneak a quick 'un before I slope off to bed. I'm not an enormous follower of "bands" these days, but two outstanding contemporary ones are Deerhunter (from Atlanta, Georgia) & Broadcast (King's Heath, Birmingham). The likelihood of them ever getting together & thrashing out some spontaneous, freeform electronic racket'd initially appear rather slim but it did actually happen - on Saturday 17th May 2008 it says 'ere - & the results were posted on Deerhunter's spot-on blog for posterity. If you know & love Broadcast's Microtronics e.p. series you'll dig 10 Short Tape Experiments as this session co-opts the same format. And if you know & love Deerhunter's blog you'll already be accustomed to them uploading generous amounts of quality gratis music like this stuff. To be fair, it's actually just Deerhunter's frontman, the pleasantly weird Bradford Cox (in his Atlas Sound guise), who hooked up with Trish & James for these recordings but as he essentially is Deerhunter, soooooo...
Deerhunter are touring the UK this month &, frankly, I can't wait. (but more on that later I expect...). Still no sign of a new Broadcast LP or live dates though - it's been ages & I'm getting serious withdrawal symptoms (they've got drummer problems reportedly). Fingers crossed, they'll take me up on my semi-serious suggestion that they have a crack at "Lady Godiva's Operation" now that their cover of Nico's "60/40" is kinda played out (you can find the latter on their August 2003 Peel session if you dig about a bit).
